CoolSculpting technology has only been around since 2010, and it has changed the way plastic surgeons are able to treat patients seeking permanent fat removal. This unique device can do a lot to improve its patients’ body contour without a single incision. Just with the use of cold temperatures, CoolSculpting has begun to do amazing things in the world of plastic surgery. Now, it seems that there are even more benefits to this device than previously thought.
What Is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is a unique approach to permanent fat cell removal, developed by Harvard medical scientists and approved for patient use in 2010. Using the science of cryolipolysis, Zeltiq Aesthetic, Inc. has created this special device which will expose fat cells to cold temperatures, ultimately causing their destruction. When these freezing temperatures make contact with fat cells, the process of cell death, or apoptosis, begins. As these fat cells die off, the body metabolizes them back into the body over the course of three to four months.
While CoolSculpting is lethal to these fat cells found deep in the tissue layers, the cold temperatures do not harm the surrounding cells, skin, tissue, muscles, or nerves. The machine is designed to deliver temperatures that are uniquely harmful to fat cells alone, leaving the rest of the body safe and sound. Through the use of CoolSculpting, patients can expect to see a 25% fat reduction in the treatment area, with results gradually appearing over the course of up to 16 weeks.
What Is Dual CoolSculpting?
The CoolSculpting machine works by pulling skin up and sandwiching it between two cooling paddles. These paddles stay in place, delivering the cold directly to the fat cells, sometimes for up to one hour. Patients are able to stay awake for the procedure, often sitting or lying down comfortably as the machines work. Some may read a book, work on a laptop, or even take a nap.
With a Dual CoolSculpting procedure, two machines are used at the same time to cut a patient’s treatment time in half. Adding a second machine allows the patient to receive one-hour treatments to two areas at once, like both of the thighs or both of the hips, instead of coming back for two separate visits. The machines can treat many different areas of the body, including the arms and legs, hips, back, abdomen, and more. With Dual CoolSculpting, patients that need treatment in multiple areas can cut down on their appointments and spend less time in the procedure room.
What Are the Benefits of CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is a nonsurgical procedure that delivers real, measurable results. Because it is nonsurgical, there is no downtime required following your procedure. Patients are able to return to work on the same day and will not experience any significant swelling, bruising, or discomfort. While it may take up to three weeks to begin to notice your results, patients can expect to see up to a quarter of the fat in the treatment area to be gone for good. CoolSculpting results are as long-lasting as a traditional liposuction without the pain, recovery time, and other associated risks.
How Does CoolSculpting Tighten the Skin?
Now that the CoolSculpting procedure has been in use for a few years, additional benefits are becoming noticed by patients and surgeons alike. In particular, many surgeons are reporting that their patients have been experiencing a skin tightening effect called cryodermadstringo from their treatments with the Coolsculpting machine. Previously, there had not been any known skin-tightening effect from the cryolipolysis treatments, but it continues to occur for up to a quarter of all patients after their sessions. While these observations are still recent, medical researchers are hoping to learn more about the correlation between CoolSculpting and skin tightening. This can only be good news for CoolSculpting patients who are hoping to avoid laxity in the skin surrounding their treatment area. Discuss your concerns about CoolSculpting, its effects, and the procedure during your consultation to learn more about this unique approach to fat removal.
