What is Gluteal Enhancement / Brazilian Butt Lift?
Gluteal enhancement refers to the use of surgical techniques to enhance the appearance of the buttocks. This typically means increasing the size of the butt, improving the roundness of the contours, and lifting the tissues for a more youthful appearance. The procedure can also address asymmetry in the buttocks, which may be present naturally or as a result of weight gain or loss.
The most common procedure used to enhance the buttocks is the Brazilian Butt Lift. This procedure involves harvesting, or removing fat, from one area of the body, purifying and preparing it, and then injecting it into the buttocks to naturally increase volume and improve contour. This type of fat grafting transplants fat from an undesired site to the butt, where it will settle and remain permanently. Fat grafting is the most common method for buttock augmentation, but there is an option for patients who do not have enough body fat to graft, or are otherwise not a candidate for a Brazilian Butt Lift. Buttock implants are synthetic devices that we place surgically for permanent butt augmentation, and can be an effective method of gluteal enhancement.
Benefits of Gluteal Enhancement
There are many different reasons people choose to undergo gluteal enhancement, but the decision is deeply personal and individual. Fat grafting to the buttocks, such as the Brazilian Butt Lift procedure, can improve the overall silhouette and contours of the body, while maintaining a soft and natural appearance. Buttocks appear fuller, perkier, and more youthful in appearance. This procedure creates results that look and feel completely natural, since is necessary to use the body’s own tissues to augment the butt.
While the most obvious benefits are a more shapely and attractive butt, there are also psychological benefits that you can achieve through undergoing buttock augmentation. Patients typically gain a great deal of confidence and self-esteem once they’ve healed from the surgery. They may feel more comfortable wearing certain clothing in public, particularly at the beach. Another surprising benefit is that correcting asymmetries in the buttocks can improve overall balance and reduce back pain. Though the benefits are largely cosmetic, many patients see an improvement in their quality of life after a Brazilian Butt Lift.
*Each patient is unique and individual results may vary.
Are You a Good Candidate for a Brazilian Butt Lift?
Good candidates for a Brazilian Butt Lift are healthy adult men and women who would like to enhance the size and shape of the buttocks. The fat transfer procedure is quite safe, and as long as you are in general good health and do not smoke, you should be a good candidate for a Brazilian Butt Lift. If you smoke, you will need to discuss smoking cessation at your consultation prior to undergoing the procedure, as it delays healing. Patients desiring a Brazilian Butt Lift do need to have sufficient unwanted fat so the doctor can remove it for use in the procedure. Slim or muscular patients without excess body fat may not be eligible, or may need to undergo a butt implant surgery instead. Brazilian Butt Lift patients will ideally be at a stable weight, since weight fluctuations after surgery can alter the results.
Patients should have realistic expectations regarding the procedure results, should examine before-and-after photos, and discuss individual expectations with the surgeon as well as the Brazilian Butt Lift cost. Only you and your plastic surgeon can determine whether or not you are a good candidate for gluteal enhancement.

Both the Brazilian Butt Lift and butt implantation procedures are typically performed in an outpatient setting. The Brazilian Butt Lift surgery generally takes about 90 minutes, but can last up to 4 hours, depending on the amount of fat cells that the Doctor needs to be harvest and re-inject to reach the patient’s goals. First, the doctor will administer anesthesia. The type of anesthesia depends on the procedure, but is generally either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation (usually IV).
For the fat grafting procedure, we make small incisions at the site of fat removal first. The doctor performs Liposuction to harvest the excess fat, which involves the use of a small, hollow tube to break up the fat and suction it out of the body. Patient may need about two to three times more fat to harvest, since the fat cells needs purifying before injection into the buttocks. Once the doctor processes the fat cells , we inject them into the buttocks to enhance the size and shape.
If the patient chooses gluteal enhancement through implantation, we will place butt implants through incisions and depending on the size of the implants we can make it in various locations, depending on the size of the implants. Care is taken to hide scars; therefore, incisions are made in locations with natural creases or otherwise discrete areas. Incisions may be made between the cheeks, at the top of the buttocks, in the crease below the buttocks, or midline above the sacrum. Once we make the incisions, we place and secure the implants, and then place sutures to close the incisions.
The Brazilian Butt Lift Recovery and Downtime
Most gluteal enhancement patients should expect to take about 2-3 weeks off work, after that period, you can return to work depending on the procedure. You will wear a compression garment 24/7 until the doctor instructs you otherwise. You likely notice some swelling, bruising, temporary loss of sensation, and discomfort. The Doctor will give you pain medication to reduce discomfort during the initial recovery period. Patients should avoid extensive sitting for several weeks after the procedure, and may need to use a special cushion for a month or two after surgery to help promote optimal results. Patients should also sleep on their side. Avoid Strenuous activity for at least 4 weeks to allow for healing. Swelling will subside gradually over a period of a few months, therefore patients need to be patient in the Brazilian Butt Lift recovery process as their body accommodates to their new, more shapely figure as a result of their gluteal enhancement.
