What is Gluteal Enhancement / Brazilian Butt Lift?
Gluteal enhancement refers to the use of surgical techniques to enhance the appearance of the buttocks. This typically means increasing the size of the butt, improving the roundness of the contours, and lifting the tissues for a more youthful appearance. The procedure can also address asymmetry in the buttocks, which may be present naturally or as a result of weight gain or loss.
The most common procedure used to enhance the buttocks is the Brazilian Butt Lift. This procedure involves harvesting, or removing fat, from one area of the body, purifying and preparing it, and then injecting it into the buttocks to naturally increase volume and improve contour. This type of fat grafting transplants fat from an undesired site to the butt, where it will settle and remain permanently. Fat grafting is the most common method for buttock augmentation, but there is an option for patients who do not have enough body fat to graft, or are otherwise not a candidate for a Brazilian Butt Lift. Buttock implants are synthetic devices that are placed surgically for permanent butt augmentation, and can be an effective method of gluteal enhancement.
Benefits of Gluteal Enhancement
There are many different reasons people choose to undergo gluteal enhancement, but the decision is deeply personal and individual. Fat grafting to the buttocks, such as the Brazilian Butt Lift procedure, can improve the overall silhouette and contours of the body, while maintaining a soft and natural appearance. Buttocks appear fuller, perkier, and more youthful in appearance. This procedure creates results that look and feel completely natural, since the body’s own tissues are used to augment the butt.
While the most obvious benefits are a more shapely and attractive butt, there are also psychological benefits that can be achieved through undergoing buttock augmentation. Patients typically gain a great deal of confidence and self-esteem once they’ve healed from the surgery. They may feel more comfortable wearing certain clothing in public, particularly at the beach. Another surprising benefit is that correcting asymmetries in the buttocks can improve overall balance and reduce back pain. Though the benefits are largely cosmetic, many patients see an improvement in their quality of life after a Brazilian Butt Lift.

Are You a Good Candidate for a Brazilian Butt Lift?
Good candidates for a Brazilian Butt Lift are healthy adult men and women who would like to enhance the size and shape of the buttocks. The fat transfer procedure is quite safe, and as long as you are in general good health and do not smoke, you should be a good candidate for a Brazilian Butt Lift. If you smoke, you will need to discuss smoking cessation at your consultation prior to undergoing the procedure, as it delays healing. Patients desiring a Brazilian Butt Lift do need to have sufficient unwanted fat that can be removed for use in the procedure. Slim or muscular patients without excess body fat may not be eligible, or may need to undergo a butt implant surgery instead. Brazilian Butt Lift patients will ideally be at a stable weight, since weight fluctuations after surgery can alter the results.
Patients should have realistic expectations regarding the procedure results, should examine before-and-after photos, and discuss individual expectations with the surgeon as well as the Brazilian Butt Lift cost. Only you and your plastic surgeon can determine whether or not you are a good candidate for gluteal enhancement.

The Brazilian Butt Lift Procedure
Once you’ve decided to proceed with a gluteal enhancement procedure, you will schedule the plastic surgery with Dr. Steinbrech’s office and receive pre-operative instructions. It is very important for your safety and results that you follow these instructions closely.
Both the Brazilian Butt Lift and butt implantation procedures are typically performed in an outpatient setting. The Brazilian Butt Lift generally takes about 90 minutes, but can last up to 4 hours, depending on the amount of fat cells that needs to be harvested and re-injected to reach the patient’s goals. First, anesthesia will be administered. The type that will be used depends on the procedure, but is generally either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation (usually IV).
For the fat grafting procedure, small incisions are made at the site of fat removal first. Liposuction is performed to harvest the fat, which involves the use of a small, hollow tube to break up the fat and suction it out of the body. About two to three times more fat than will be needed is harvested, since the fat cells must be purified before injection into the buttocks. Once the fat cells have been processed, it is injected into the buttocks to enhance the size and shape.
If the patient chooses gluteal enhancement through implantation, butt implants are placed through incisions that can be made in various locations, depending on the size of the implants. Care is taken to hide scars; therefore, incisions are made in locations with natural creases or otherwise discrete areas. Incisions may be made between the cheeks, at the top of the buttocks, in the crease below the buttocks, or midline above the sacrum. Once the incisions have been made, the implants are placed and secured. Then, sutures are placed to close the incisions.
The Brazilian Butt Lift Recovery and Downtime
Most gluteal enhancement patients should expect to take about 2-3 weeks off work, depending on the procedure. You will wear a compression garment 24/7 until you are instructed otherwise. You will likely notice some swelling, bruising, temporary loss of sensation, and discomfort. You will receive pain medication to reduce discomfort during the initial recovery period. Patients should avoid extensive sitting for several weeks after the procedure, and may need to use a special cushion for a month or two after surgery to help promote optimal results. Patients should also sleep on their side. Strenuous activity will need to be avoided for at least 4 weeks to allow for healing. Swelling will subside gradually over a period of a few months, therefore patients need to be patient in the Brazilian Butt Lift recovery process as their body accommodates to their new, more shapely figure as a result of their gluteal enhancement.

Brazilian Butt Lift FAQ
Fat grafting (Brazilian Butt Lift) uses the patient’s own fat for natural butt augmentation. Butt implants are synthetic devices used to enhance the size of the buttocks.
The fat grafted to the buttocks during a Brazilian Butt lift will remain there permanently. However, not all of the fat cells grafted will survive over the first six months, therefore it takes a few months to see the true results. Additionally, weight fluctuations following surgery can affect the overall results of the procedure.
As with any surgery, there are some risks, including bleeding, infection, anesthesia issues, unfavorable scarring, and poor outcome. However, the procedures are generally safe, especially when you choose a board certified plastic surgeon. Individual risks are discussed with each patient at their consultation and can be addressed with the surgeon.
Typically, your plastic surgeon will make a recommendation based on your own unique needs. If there is enough fat to harvest, it is generally more common to undergo a Brazilian Butt lift over implants, since the results are more natural.
Patients usually have to be 18 or 21 years of age to undergo cosmetic surgical procedures, except in certain cases. Many young people choose to undergo gluteal enhancement, but people of all ages choose the procedure.
Typically, butt implants are made of silicone, a material used in many cosmetic procedures, such as breast and facial implants.
The Brazilian Butt Lift procedure requires only small incisions where fat is extracted, and none in the buttocks. Any scarring should be minimal, and not easily noticed once healing is complete and the scars have begun to fade. Butt implants require larger incisions, and the amount of visible scarring will depend on where the incisions must be placed. Incision placement depends on the size of implants placed and surgeon preference, however care is taken to place incisions strategically to reduce scar visibility.
The donor sites will depend on the patient’s unique fat cells distribution. Common areas for harvest include the hips, thighs, and stomach.
Yes, you must have enough fat to harvest for the procedure. Additionally, future weight fluctuations can alter the size and shape of the buttocks.
It depends on how much fat is needed to reach your butt enhancement goals. However, the harvest should not be considered a method of weight loss, as the actual number of pounds removed is typically low. However, the overall contour of the body will be enhanced, and you may appear slimmer.
