What is the Abdominoplasty Procedure?

The tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdominal area and to tighten the underlying muscles. It is an effective way to address loose skin around the belly button, as well as sagging skin due to weight fluctuations or pregnancy. During a tummy tuck procedure, excess skin and fat are removed by making incisions around the lower abdomen. The belly button may also be repositioned in order to create more natural-looking contours. Finally, the remaining skin is pulled tight and sutured together in order to create a smoother, firmer abdomen.

Ideal Candidates for a Tummy Tuck

Ideal candidates for a tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, are individuals with loose skin or weakened abdominal muscles due to weight gain or loss, pregnancy, or aging. These individuals may have excess fatty tissue that is resistant to diet and exercise, resulting in an unflattering abdominal profile. Those seeking cosmetic surgery procedures should be in good overall health and at a stable, healthy weight before considering a tummy tuck.

A “Tummy Tuck” surgery is mostly known as an abdominoplasty.

A tummy tuck both sculpts the waistline and in most cases repairs weakened muscles in the abdominal wall. Excess abdominal fat is removed but patients with significant tummy rolls may want to consider and may benefit from a combination of the two procedures.

Dr. Steinbrech will discuss your surgical options, explaining the difference between a full tummy tuck and a mini tummy tuck. A full tummy tuck addresses both the upper and lower belly. A mini tummy tuck tightens only the area below the navel.

By toning a larger part of your abdomen, the full tummy tuck procedure may best meet your aesthetic goals. The mini tummy tuck is less invasive and less expensive while exclusively addressing the area below the navel.

Abdominoplasty procedures for post bariatric patients who have lost a large amount of weight, which is typically 100 pounds or more, require patients to be sufficiently healthy to withstand the rigors of major surgery together with the experience of an extended recovery period associated with a tummy tuck or a body lift.

A post bariatric tummy tuck surgery is not a weight loss procedure, although patients generally lose some weight as skin, tissue, and minor fat deposits are removed. Post bariatric patients who are good candidates for a tummy tuck are patients who have at the time of their procedure lost most of their excess body fat generally with the exception of a few localized deposits. This procedure can take several months for a full recovery.

Dr. Steinbrech wants you to be comfortable that your consultation has provided the opportunity to develop a full understanding of your surgical options and risk by addressing all questions and concerns patiently and completely.

I did abdominal etching (6 pack definition) back in 2015. Right after the surgery, when everything was still swollen, I was very concerned. However, Dr. Steinbrech calmed me down. He turned out to be right, in a few months I got the abs I always dreamed of. Two years since, I still have an awesome, well defined stomach. The only downside, I have been working out much less because the result is visible, so why bother? )) As far as my experience with the doctor, I’ll just say that Dr. Steinbrech is a great guy. He will talk to you, explain things, address your concerns, and all that without any…

Your Abdominoplasty Procedure

During the Abdominoplasty procedure, Dr. Steinbrech will make a horizontal incision along the lower abdomen. Typically performed under general anesthesia, the surgery typically has a duration of around two to three hours. Additionally, the option of incorporating liposuction may be explored to enhance abdominal contouring.

Dr. Steinbrech will make two incisions: one from hipbone to hipbone close to the pubic area, and another around the navel. After Dr. Steinbrech separates the skin from the abdominal muscles they will be pulled together and stitched into place for a firmer abdomen and narrower waist.

The skin flap will be carefully pulled down and tightened over the newly strengthened muscles, resulting in the removal of any surplus skin. The navel will be reattached in a natural position, and the incisions will be closed.

Abdominoplasty Recovery

An abdominoplasty recovery always involves moving about on the day of your surgery and certainly following. Moving about prevents blood clots while encouraging a more rapid body healing. Most patients can resume light activity 10 to 15 days post-procedure although a wait of six weeks is suggested before you engage in rigorous exercise.

With a balanced diet and regular exercise, tummy tuck procedures are typically long lasting. Abdominoplasty will likely leave a permanent scar stretching between the hips, although it is concealed by a bikini line coverage. Recovery time ranges from two weeks to a few months.

Pain control and management have been enhanced with a new drug known as Exparel. This is a non-narcotic based pain reliever that is injected directly into the tissue, fascia, and muscles during surgery. It is effective in managing pain for up to 72 hours post-procedure. Exparel provides our patients the opportunity to greatly reduce the use of narcotic pain medications.

When can I return to work following an abdominoplasty?

Most people can return to work within two weeks of having an abdominoplasty procedure. It is important to remember that everyone heals differently, so it is important to follow your surgeon’s post-op instructions closely.

What is the Average Cost of Tummy Tuck Surgery?

The cost of tummy tuck surgery will vary based on the surgeon you choose, their expertise, geographic location, and other factors. Generally, you can expect to pay between $12,000 and $17,000 for a tummy tuck. However, it is important to discuss the cost of surgery with your surgeon before undergoing treatment.

There are a few things that can affect the cost of a tummy tuck. The first is the type of surgery that is performed. A traditional tummy tuck typically costs more than a mini tummy tuck.

Additionally, whether or not you require general anesthesia will also impact the cost. We offer financing options to help make the procedure more affordable.

Does Insurance Typically Cover the Cost of Tummy Tuck Surgery?

Abdominoplasty surgery is not typically covered by insurance due to it being a cosmetic procedure. However, you may be able to get a portion covered if it’s performed for medical reasons, such as to correct a hernia. It is important to speak with your insurance company to find out if they offer coverage for this procedure.

Abdominoplasty Potential Risks and Complications

Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is a popular outpatient procedure that can lead to a smoother and firmer abdomen. However, it is important to be aware of potential risks and complications. Patients may experience changes in skin sensation, numbness, or tingling in the months following surgery as nerves heal. It is crucial to maintain a stable weight and follow a healthy lifestyle to ensure optimal results and minimize the risk of complications. The healing process can vary for each individual, with some patients experiencing swelling or bruising that can be alleviated with compression garments. Muscle tightening during abdominoplasty can also lead to discomfort or limited mobility temporarily. Consulting with an experienced surgeon like Dr. Steinbrech in New York, NY can help guide you through the process and address any concerns you may have about the procedure.

“Tummy Tuck Before and After Images” will help you decide whether a tummy tuck or a complete body lift procedure will help you obtain your aesthetic goals.

Frequently Asked Tummy Tuck Questions

What is the difference between a tummy tuck and an abdominoplasty?

A tummy tuck (or abdominoplasty) is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the midsection and to tighten the abdominal muscles. During a tummy tuck, the belly button is typically repositioned and excess skin removed resulting in a narrower waistline.

How much does a tummy tuck cost in NYC?

The cost of abdominoplasty in New York City can vary depending on the type of procedure performed and the extent of treatment. Generally, the average cost for a basic abdominoplasty procedure is between $5,500 and $7,000. However, more complex procedures can range from $12,000 to $17,000 or more.

How painful is a tummy tuck?

An abdominoplasty can be an uncomfortable procedure, but most patients report a manageable level of pain. Pain management is taken seriously and includes the use of counter-pain medications and local anesthesia. Most patients find that the pain subsides within a few days and is easily managed with over-the-counter pain medications.

How much weight should I lose for a tummy tuck?

The best way to determine how much weight you should lose for an abdominoplasty is to consult with your doctor and discuss your medical history, the condition of your abdominal region, and if you have had any massive weight loss. Your doctor will be able to assess your individual needs and provide advice that is tailored to help you achieve the best possible results.

What are the benefits of tummy tuck surgery?

As with most body contouring procedures, the results produced by tummy tuck surgery can profoundly impact how your view your body. Confidence and feelings of self-worth may be enhanced. Studies indicate a positive attitude in combination with improved physical activity may combine to enhance a person’s overall quality of life.
While it is impossible to guarantee this particular result it is important to be mindful of the need to maintain a healthier lifestyle following your tummy tuck surgery which can certainly help pave the way for your potential life-enhancing benefits.

Are there any side effects or risks of abdominoplasty?

Though rare, post-op complications from surgery may be possible. They may include infection, blood clots and poor healing, which may require further surgery. Previous abdominal surgery patients should know that their old scars could be stretched, raised, or generally become more noticeable after the tummy tuck procedure. A scar revision procedure after abdominoplasty may minimize the appearance of an unsightly scar.

Who are good candidates for tummy tuck surgery?

Individuals who have localized fat deposits or sagging skin that persist despite efforts with diet and exercise can be considered suitable candidates for abdominoplasty. This includes individuals with stretched skin and muscles resulting from pregnancy, as they often experience favorable outcomes from the procedure. Furthermore, those who have achieved their desired weight loss but are left with excess skin, including patients who have undergone bariatric surgery, can also benefit from abdominoplasty. Good candidates for a tummy tuck generally possess good physical health but struggle with areas of stubborn fat or lax skin that are unresponsive to conventional weight management methods. Additionally, older individuals and those with a mild level of obesity, provided their skin still retains sufficient elasticity, may also be considered suitable candidates for abdominoplasty.
